Hantavirus Has No Approved Treatment, But Researchers Are Working on Options

Hantavirus was first identified in the United States during a 1993 outbreak in the Four Corners region of the Southwest, where an unusually high number of young, healthy adults died from an unexplained respiratory illness later attributed to the Sin Nombre strain carried by deer mice. Since then, the CDC has recorded several hundred cases in the U.S., with exposure risks documented in Florida tied to cotton rats and in western states tied to deer mouse contact. The Andes strain involved in the recent cruise ship outbreak originates primarily in South America and differs from most other strains in its capacity for human-to-human spread - a characteristic that has elevated scientific and public health scrutiny. Despite periodic outbreaks and decades of research, hantavirus vaccine development has advanced slowly, and treatment options remain largely supportive rather than curative.
