Hantavirus is a family of viruses carried by rodents, particularly deer mice and rats, and can cause a severe respiratory illness known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Human infection typically occurs through inhalation of dust contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, making rural workers, campers, and those in close contact with rodent habitats the highest-risk groups. The virus is not considered easily transmissible between people, which has informed French authorities' assessment that the current cluster is containable.
