Colorado hantavirus death unrelated to cruise ship outbreak, officials say

Hantavirus is a rare respiratory illness transmitted primarily through exposure to infected rodents - particularly deer mice - and their droppings or urine. It does not spread between people under ordinary conditions. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, its most severe form, carries a fatality rate of roughly 35 to 38 percent, making confirmed cases a public health priority even when numbers are small. A separate hantavirus cluster linked to a cruise ship has prompted several U.S. states, including California, to initiate monitoring efforts. Colorado's fatality is epidemiologically distinct from that cluster, though the concurrent timing drew public attention to both situations.
